Puppy Shopping List (Older dogs too)

Clients often ask me for product recommendations, so I compiled a list of some recommended products for dogs. This will be updated periodically as I find new products that I like.

Management Options

Management solutions are important for puppy training to keep your puppy safe and to prevent her from learning bad habits. Crates are recommended for housetraining and preventing destruction during times when your puppy will be in there for the current amount of time that she can hold her bladder without having an accident.

You want to prevent your puppy from having an accident in the crate. If you are going to be gone longer than she can hold it, use a long term confinement area with either an exercise pen or a gate, shown below. Questions? Ask in the Forums.

Locking Pet Gate
High-quality Locking Pet Gate from Orvis can be used in many situations where a baby gate won't do the trick.
Freestanding gagte
This freestanding gate from Orvis can be used for wide doorways.
freestanding gate

This is another high-quality option from PetSmart for freestanding gates when you don't want to damage your woodwork or a baby gate won't fit your situation.

This can be used as a long-term confinement area. Place it in on a surface that can't be damaged by pet messes, such as a kitchen floor. When puppies go potty in a long-term confinement area, it is not considered an "accident".
This is a nicer-looking version of the normal metal version found at most stores.
This folds up for easy storage or out of town trips.
Kongs for Mental Stimulation
Kong Time - Mental stimulation while you are away. You set the timer for four or eight hours and a Kong gets released periodically during that time. Stuff it with yummy treats and food to keep your dog busy. You can also freeze the Kong for longer-lasting fun.
This is a different shape than the normal Kong shown below. I like to put food and a bit of peanut butter in it, shake it up and watch my dogs eat their dinner in a much slower time than out of their bowl.
kong
An amazing invention to keep dogs busy. Get creative with stuffing. My favorite recipe: cooked pasta, cheese, dried chicken, microwave for 30 seconds and freeze. My dogs can work on this for 2 hours!
Chews
Antlerz
A natural, long-lasting chew.
CET Chews
Coated with ingredients that are good for dogs teeth. Chewing fun and dental care in one.
I find beef tendons to be gentle on most dogs stomachs. I never recommend leaving chews like this when dogs are alone.  Use Kongs for that.
Treats
Pet Botanics
This is the soft roll that I use that is easy to cut up into small pieces. You can also use bigger chunks for stuffing Kongs. Comes in many size rolls and stays fresh for long periods of time if kept in the freezer.
Very easy to break up and dogs love it. Great for Kong stufffing.
Chicken is usually gentle on most dogs stomachs and is great for Kong stuffing or training.
A healthy alternative to other chews.
Real Meat Treats - Chicken, Venison and More
Really soft easy to break up pieces. Mostly meat. Very high-quality. Dont' let the price fool you. Use really small pieces and it will last a long time.
Another poultry option. I use kitchen shears to cut into small pieces. Duck can be a bit stringy to break by hand.
Car Harness
Keep your lovable pooch safe while traveling.
Grooming Tools
Important to have on hand when cutting nails.

About Jeff Millman

I am a private dog trainer in Chicago, IL. I studied at the famous Academy for Dog Training in San Francisco, with the phenomenal trainer Jean Donaldson. I started Chicago Paws, my private dog training business in 2001 and I started my online dog training site WatchandTrain.com January of 2007. I launched the community portion of the site at the end of 2007. I am a zealot about positive reinforcement-only dog training and want everyone to enjoy their dogs as much as I enjoy mine -- without using pain or fear of any kind in dog training. I live in Chicago with my wonderful wife, Cassy and our two Collies, Ranger and Trooper, and our Shetland Sheepdog, Linus.
