First dog aggressive about food toward second dog

    Hello,

I have a two-year-old female dog and I just adopted a four-month-old male pup. They get along pretty well, and my first dog has been getting better at sharing her toys and stuff with him. However, she doesn't seem to be able to get over her food issue. She's from a shelter and she's always had food issues, hard time with other dogs' presence when there is food involved. Before the puppy came, she used to be free-fed since she never ate more than her daily amount. Since there is a puppy, I started feeding both twice a day. My first dog gets her food first and the puppy gets his. Whether she has her food or not, she gets very upset and aggressive towards the puppy when the puppy is eating his food. So far, I have crated the first dog while puppy is eating, and block her view when she uncontrollably barks and let her see it again when she calms down. Could you help me deal with her food issue? I'm completely okay with her guarding her own food, but I can't deal with her not being able to deal with the puppy eating his food...Thank you!

Welcome to the community. You should read this post (and also the link that it mentions in the post) and let me know if you have questions. The strategies are the same for cats or dogs.

    Good luck.
