    Dog on Dog agression

Katie is a 3yr old Springer. Ihave had her for 1.5yrs from a shelter.  She is very obediant to humans and tender with Children.  She has issues with SOME dogs.  Most of the time it is whena  dog is in the alley below our balcony, she lunges, barks and growls. In the middle of the night she awakes from a dead sleep tearing through the house to the balcony door to see if the noise she heard is a dog.  It is also one specific dog that lives down the hall. She can smell her anywhere she has been or see her across the street and acts the same as previously mentioned.  Some dogs, no problem, they can come in, be in the ahlls or the alley.  But others are a prolem.  Recently, she even has been aggressive towards a dog that she has know since i had her.  She allowed this dog in our old condo but yesterday, he came tothe new one and she has been very bad.  He is much larger than she and fixed.  She has not drwn blood but they sound pretty serious.

I can seperate them and get her to sit. I have tried to roll her and she does it but her pupils are dillalated and her heart is pounding.  I know she is still very aroused.

    What are your suggestions?

You need to lower her anxiety around all stimuli that she is currently reacting to. Over time, she will learn to be calm instead of reactive. I strongly urge you not to roll her. You might have heard this from the Dog Whisperer or other traditional trainers. This is a really bad idea. Read this post about alpha rolls. Your dog is also exhibiting barrier frustration. Read this post about strategies to prevent barrier frustration.

For the dog to dog aggression, this forum post should answer your questions.

Let me know if you have questions.

Thank you for your suggestion.  I read the two things you noted and they make sense.  I ordered 2 books, Mine! and Calming Signals.  Do you think these will assist as well?  I know she is easily exciteable.  I had to stop taking her to daycare as she developed HGE.  She hasnt had it since I stopped taking her.  SHe is clicker trained but when she flips that switch, it is tough to get her attention.

Those books are great, FIGHT! is also really good. I am also writing a book about aggression that I will be selling on my site. I wish it were finished for you! Let me know if you have more questions.
